Background

Since 1985, Sea Scout leaders from all over Europe have gathered every three years to take part in the European Sea Scouting Seminar ("Eurosea"). The 9th such seminar took place in Ireland, at the Larch Hill Scout Center, in May 2008 and brought together 60 participants, planning team, and guests.

The seminar is one of the most popular events that takes place in Europe, and has a very special atmosphere due to the participants all having the same background through working in, or being involved with, Sea Scouting.

1st to 5th September 2010.
Transport for those arriving by air will be provided from Ruzyne airport and the city centre to Plzen timed to arrive for the opening at 1230 hours. The departure from Praha-Ruzyne airport will be at 1100 hours People arriving later will be sent a detailed plan on how to travel to Plzen at their own expense. Those arriving by car are requested to arrive at the hostel by 1230 hours Departure for Prague airport will be timed to arrive at the airport 1300 hours on Sunday. Detailed schedule is on Schedule.

Methodology

A wide variety of working methods will be used, including plenary sessions, audio-visual presentations, outdoor activities, case studies, group discussions, team tasks, workshops, exhibitions, and market place.

Social events

There will be some social activities such as a welcome party, international evening, sightseeing, sailing and a farewell party.

Languages

The event will be held in English.

Number of participants

The event is designed to accept up to 80 participants. Priority will be given to have the largest number of different countries represented.

Applications

The attached application form should be mailed or faxed to the World Scout Bureau European Regional Office or e-mailed to euro-events@worldnet.scout.org by 15th April 2010. If the application is sent by e-mail, please send it through your national office or international commissioner (to confirm the support from your national association). Applications received directly from individuals will not be considered.

Participation fee

The participation fee is 330 € but is indexed after GNP. The fee covers all accommodation and meals from lunch on the 1 of September to packaged lunch on the 5. It also covers transfer Prague/Plzen/Prague all program materials and documentation, wi-fi internet connection. The participation fee does not include any health or other insurance or personal expenses, such as telephone and bar charges. Bank connections and details for paying the seminar participation fee will be sent to all National associations. The deadline for payment is 15th June 2010.

Travel arrangements

Once participants have been selected (acceptance letters will be sent to national associations by 30th May 2010), they should make their own travel arrangements and obtain a visa, if necessary. If you require an official invitation to obtain a visa, please indicate this clearly on your application form. Travel forms will be included in the information package that will be sent to participants in June. Participants arriving earlier or leaving later and who would like assistance in finding accommodation (at their own expenses) or home hospitality should contact the host committee using email address: eurosea10@krjplzen.cz.

Insurance

The WOSM European Region does not provide insurance cover for the participants during the event or during travel to or from the venue. Please note that this is the exclusive responsibility of the national association to arrange necessary insurance (illness, accidents, repatriation etc.) for their participants.

Preparation

Participants are asked to prepare a case study of best practices or a workshop in their association to be presented at the seminar. If you wish to do so please contact the planning team with the title that you are willing to offer and provide a brief description. Participants are asked to choose a program for “Czech day” by using of email eurosea10@krjplzen.cz by 20th of June. Information about program is on Czech date.

What to bring

  • Scout uniform;
  • Towel;
  • Casual clothing;
  • Sailing clothing and shoes/boots; Life vests and all other safety equipment will be provided;
  • Materials for the Market Place to present Sea Scouting in your country (e.g. photos, slides, videos, information sheets, maps, posters, fact sheets, results of surveys). Display panels will be provided to each country represented;
  • Samples of typical food and drinks from your country for the international evening;
  • Materials to run a Best Practice and or a workshop about safety;
  • Details of how you have celebrated 100 years for Sea Scouting.

A meeting pack and detailed program will be sent as soon as your registration has been accepted.

Eurosea 11

If your association would like to hold Eurosea 11 either in 1012 or 2013 (to be decided at E10) then you should come with a presentation of what you can offer. Please let us know if you would like to make a bid. Details of requirements are available on Odysseus's home page.

Report from Eurosea 10 Planning Team, 9-10 October 2009, Plzen-Prague, Czech Republic

The dates for the next Eurosea been held in 2010 will be from Wednesday 1st to Sunday 5th September 2010 at Plzen-Skvrnany training college, Plzen, Czech Republic.

Eurosea 10 planning team Eurosea seminars had begun back in 1983 in Greece. The aim is to enable national associations to share ideas and experiences on how to develop Sea Scouting/Guiding or water-based programs in general. The profile of attendees are members of national or regional teams responsible for Sea Scouting/Guiding or developing water-based programs and representatives from associations interested in introducing Sea Scouting/Guiding. The last Eurosea 9 was held in 2008 in Larch Hill and was attended by 60 delegates from 22 different countries.

Plzen The program planned will cover workshops on Starting up Sea Scouts, How to have a successful Sea Scout Troop, sourcing and raising funds (through EU), sourcing membership and volunteers, new EU legislation effecting safety at sea. Countries attending will have the opportunity to present their best practices. There will be time to experience water activities by our hosts.

Site visit In addition it was discussed that the Odysseus (European Sea Scout Team) Group will be putting together an Armada to attend the 2011 World Jamboree at Kristianstad, Sweden. The Armada will assemble at Malmö, Sweden and travel the 150 mile passage via Bornholm Island in the Baltic Sea before arriving at Kristianstad. There will be opportunity for all European Sea Scouts and leaders to participate.

At the beginning of next year the Odysseus group will be launching a commemorative badge to celebrate the centenary of Sea Scouting throughout Europe. The badge will be available to all European Sea Scouts early in the year.
